DG, I like the essay so let me put this succinctly. You have written a possibly great piece that wanders away from its central thesis as soon as it can, heading directly for your two favorite hobbyhorses, white privilege and black folks, who just don't stack up in your book. You're halfway there to being a Great Crumudgeon, who can't resist the urge to give us a lecture or two. Edit, my good man. Shrill and 'please just die,' don't cut it. If we're gonna have a ride in a fast car, we want both the driver's hands on the wheel. Top of the day to ya.

James, my preceding message (the one I sent minutes ago) was sent prematurely. It was sent before I wrote part two of the message. I will now give you part 1 of the message (which appears above (or some place in this thread) and then part two of the message.

PART 1:

FIRST AN IMPORTANT technical issue. I want to be able to communicate with you, and I fear that my technical problems with substack might preclude this. I responded to your above message through my email program at about 3:16 PM today. I just got an e mail from substack stating that my message did not go through. Ergo, I am now sending it via the web site. In any event, I would love to communicate directly by writing to your e mail. How can I find your e mail address and how can I give you mine. I don't think we can post our e mail addresses on public posts.

PART TWO (AND THIS RESPONDS TO WHAT YOU WROTE):

Thank you so much for your ideas.

I thought "please just die," was cute and arrestingly comical. However, that verbiage may have been a bit too "looney tunes" and might be the sort of thing that could place me under arrest. This is just humor; I am harmless.

You also made another point, and I want to make sure I understand you completely. Do you believe that my discussion of racial tensions was a diversion away from my main point which did not belong there. I think that is your contention, but I want to be absolutely certain that I read you correctly.

David, you're gonna have to bear with, as I have a ridic schedule right now, with an actual job, a novel to edit FAST, and contacts to make. I won't get to this right away but I'll save it to see if I have anything useful to say. I wrote to you at your email a while ago, better check the Spam file. My email begins "graja." In the meantime, how about a reread of Mencken whose prose still kicks, and who carved out a whole territory for himself ?
