I loved Mad Magazine. I suppose I endured a sort of Hegelian dialectic between Mad Magazine and the Archie Comic Books.
(According to Hegel, each thesis --- or sentiment or thing or emotion -- engenders its own antithesis, e.g., love can breed hate. Karl Marx took this into the field of economics with his breakthrough "Dialectical Materialism," contending that the rich bred the poor, e.g., when one becomes rich one makes other people poor -- and this isn't just left wing theory. Learn about "credit default swaps"; the more you know about economics and law, the more you realize that Marx was spot on)
In any event, the sunshiny stupidity of the Archie Comic Books engendered my sardonic appreciation for Mad Magazine. And the tart acerbic sting of Mad ,Magazine made we want to cuddle up with the sacharine suburban shmaltz of the Archie Comics Books.
POINT TWO:
BTW, did you see my INTRODUCTORY NOTE: I am so fed up with the formatting on this site. I separated the poems, in this post, into stanzas, to make it more comprehensible and readable. However, the line spacing is the same throughout and the divisions into stanzas, and the divisions between different "songs" or "poems," is identical throughout.
I suppose I could spend more time trying to decipher the idiosyncracies of this and other sites, but I would rather devote my time trying to craft WISE AND PROVOCATIVE things to say. I hate the world I am stuck in. It is IMAGE OOBER ALLES; IDEAS ARE A MERE AFTERTHOUGHT.
I wish I could simply copy text, from a document that I wrote in word, and paste it in my posts. However, the formatting invariably is corrupted and my stuff turns into shit.
Joan, please pass this complaint on to people you may know on substack who are in a position to simplify formatting on this site.
By the way, I learned to read (mostly) by flipping thru the Mad Magazines lying around our home. Would love to re-read some of their satires from 60's/70's.
I believe there is a problem with adjusting spacing to your liking . However start a new post and copy and paste something you’ve already written into that post. Then play around with the options on the top bar. You can put different size headers in , use bold, italics etc. add footnotes, colored bars to block quotes and more! you could have done that to separate your poems using bold headlines for the titles. You just have to actually use the tools available to learn how they work:-) You can also always edit your posts and it will show up corrected on your website, but will NOT send another email to your subscribers. Substack has a large Resources section on the site for your reading and learning pleasure. I still have a lot of learning to do!
It would be in bad form if I complained about my own problems, so I will try to be brief. I just want to tie up a couple of loose ends.
I had been complaining about formatting problems with substack. You very nicely suggested that I play around with the different functions on substack, many of which are found towards the tops of pages that we use to post material.
Of course, I realize I can play around with it. I am simply trying to say that I would rather not play around with it. Every minute that I spend trying to conform to the peculiarities of this or any other site is a minute detracted from thinking and writing and most importantly living. As I get older, I find I just don't have the time for things that I consider peripheral. Nice colors and cutesy formatting is very nice, for the sort of people that like that sort of thing. I wish they had another option on substack: Just print it the way it was in my original word document.
DON'T WASTE TIME TRYING TO ANSWER. I DON'T WANT TO BURDEN YOU.
Also, I made one other point: Initially, I did not have this problem with formatting. Initially I could control when it was single spaced and when it was double spaced.
HOWEVER, WHAT ISN'T BROKE MUST BE FIXED in our frenetic, annoying world and some super nerd of an a hole at substack decided that he would change the way stuff is formatted on this site.
Thank you for your compliment on my post– very much appreciate your comments. I post twice a week, so please do keep reading and commenting when you have the time.
I love the spacing and look of your poems via the link above. You can still do it exactly that way... Substack is giving you a platform for basically free and where people can actually see what you write, if that is what you want. And you can just copy and paste from a Word document if you choose. And spacing or lines and any buttons you want to add are for your reader, as you know—you can choose or not choose to use them. I realize the "look" of something is not your thing, so just write your usual interesting work and paste.
Very clever, albeit depressing "lyrics", David. did you grow up reading Mad Magazine as I did?

Sorry if I seem to self absorbed.

This is an example of a poem on substack before they changed their rules on formatting. https://davidgottfried.substack.com/p/odes-to-rock-n-roll
Take care. I would love to see more of your stuff. Your piece on interest payments was really important.
