We always knew that Donald Trump was famous for chilling and blood-curdling rhetoric.   Now, he is reading straight from the playbook of Joseph Goebbels, Julius Streicher and every venomous viper of a Jew-Hater that made the continent of Europe a charnel house of supremely sadistic atrocities.  

A few days ago, Trump said that if he lost the election, the culpable party would be the Jews, a group of people he imagines he champions.  Just as the Nazi’s howled that the Jews deserved to suffer because they profited in Germany, Trump holds that the Jews are slated to suffer because they profited from him but do not display electoral obedience because they often vote for Democrats. 

You may dismiss Trump’s remark as mere psychosis.   It might be psychotic, but it bespeaks a psychosis that in an old version of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of the American Psychoglical Association was called “Paranoia Proper,” a devious disease in which the patient-perpetrator is able to convince throngs of people to believe his delusional rantings. 

How Trump profits by claiming that if he loses the election, the blame will lie with the Jews.

Trump’s remark will serve his malignant objectives no matter what happens:

His remark may help him win.   Because it is so supremely anti-Semitic, it will give him the votes of those Jew-Haters who have not already been seduced by his bloodthirsty banner.   (In a moment, I will explain why I believe racism and anti-Semitism is much more prevalent than most people believe.) 

You may think that Trump’s chances of winning are slim, especially since Kamala is leading in the polls.   However, if Kamala is 5 points ahead in national polls, she probably is not sufficiently ahead to win.  Hillary Clinton was usually more than 5 points ahead of Trump, and she lost. 

First, a few words about the mechanics of winning a presidential election (this is not the central point of this essay so jump ahead if you are short on time): 

The Curse of the Electoral College

First, the composition of the electorate means that the electoral college is slanted in favor of the Republicans.   The Democrats will win the popular vote because they will win New York and California with sheer avalanches of votes.   However, most small and midsized states are republican.   Those smaller states have fewer electoral votes, but they still have too many electoral votes to make the system fair and democratic.  The number of electoral votes consists of the number of Congressman and Senators from each state.  Every state has two Senators, whether they contain 40 million residents or 400,000 residents.   Hence Republican North Dakota is over-represented, and Democratic California and New York are partially  disenfranchised.   In recent elections, the winner of the popular vote often lost the presidential race:  In 2000,   Gore won the popular vote by half a million, and in 2016, Hillary Clinton won the popular vote by 3 million, more than the margins of John Kennedy in 1960, Richard Nixon in 1968, Jimmy Carter in 1976 and George Bush in 2004.

Secondly, Trump does not poll well.  His supporters tend to be paranoid and some of them may fear that blacks, in the company that commissioned the poll, will attack them if they honestly say that they support Trump.   (For example, in Virginia, in 1991, Doug Wilder, a black man, won the Gubernatorial race by about 2 points; the polls said he was 15 points ahead.  Apparently, many whites were afraid to tell pollsters that they had decided to vote against the black man.)

Third, most polls are conducted with mobile phones.  Although most people use mobile phones, many older people shy away from them, and Trump harbors considerable support among the aged. 

Accordingly, “any way you cut the cake,” this will be a close race. Trump needs the support of every Jew-Hater he can get his grubby hands on.   Accordingly, his Nazi-like comment, that Jews will be the culprit if he loses the race, was a shrewd and devilish means to advance to victory.

Of course, if he loses, he still achieves his odious goals.  If Trump loses, hordes of men, like the thugs who attacked the capital on January 6, will stampede through Jewish communities in a grand revival of the vicious pogroms of Europe.  It may be like Kristallnacht in 1938, Kishinev in 1903 and the German “Hep” riots of the 19^th century (Hordes of Huns barreled through the streets, and while hacking Jews with axes, shouted HEP, short for the Latin words, “Hierosolyma est Perdita,” roughly translated as “Jerusalem is destroyed.” ) 

By inciting anti-Jewish riots, Trump will profit because the specter of such riots will signal the further unraveling of America’s highest ideals, and this will curry favor with Trump’s puppet master and lord, Vladimir Putin, a Nazi’s idea of the perfect Russian Tzar.  Putin is wholly committed to absolutism, and he has not a whiff of socialist thought and conscience as the Russian nation has been delivered, heart and soul, to supremely capitalistic, thieving billionaires.

You cannot doubt that the American people have the requisite measure of barbarism and beastliness to blight the nation with dozens of pogroms.   At the January 6 riot, at least one thug wore a T shit that sported the words, “Camp Auschwitz.”   At the January 6 riot, policemen were bludgeoned with flagpoles.  At the January 6 riot, the thugs screamed “Hang Mike Pence.” 

And this is part and parcel of a long history of dastardly extremism.  When JFK was killed, some Texans cheered themselves for the Honor of having killed “That damn Catholic.”  Some reactionary antinomian Protestants have said that their religion is a formula that permits mass murder:  “I can kill whomever I want and still go to heaven just so long as I accept Jesus as my savior.”  After blacks were lynched, white racists often bottled and sold black body parts.       

Anti Semitism and Racism is Much More Prevalent than we can begin to imagine. 

Anti semitism is much more prevalent that most people care to admit.  Of course, the media cries about the crimes of the Holocaust, and they have cried about the Holocaust since 1945.  However, sometimes what the media preaches inspires the very thoughts and feelings the media purports to condemn.

The mainstream media has preached the gospel of civil rights for decades, and everyone who is willing to admit to reality knows that most of the police forces of the United States have a belligerent propensity to shoot and kill black men and women for no good reason at all.   

Hegel said that every thesis has within it the seeds of its own antithesis, e.g., if you love someone a lot,  you may begin to hate that person because you may resent the object of your love for being such a selfish prick who doesn’t give you anything in return.

I challenge you:   Walk up to white, non-Jewish Americans and bring up the issue of blacks and Jews.  Whether you are in Alabama or San Francisco, many people will give you the same rant:  Blacks and Jews never stop complaining about the crimes committed against blacks and Jews, and blacks and Jews have contrived and conspired to make the entire apparatus of the federal government assail and assault non-Jewish white people.

(Of course, I am not contending that blacks and Jews should stop fighting for civil rights. Rather, I am saying that it is very hard to effectively correct the problem. 

I propose that political proponents of civil rights use a different means of argumentation and persuasion:  Instead of simply charging that discrimination is pernicious, terrible and odious, yada, yada, yada, which only incites the white cry that minorities incessantly complain, get CONCRETE.  For example, remind them that although civil rights legislation precludes discrimination on the grounds of race, religion, etc., such legislation is often a feeble remedial tool. 

If one is not hired because one is black or Jewish, it is going to be extraordinarily hard to find an attorney who will take your case on a contingency fee  basis, you cannot begin to pay legal fees of several hundred dollar per hour because you are out of work, and the governmental forces that combat discrimination -- the attorneys, the commissions, the vast alphabet soup of agencies that have been concocted over the past several decades -- are more often than not underfunded, toothless and instead of getting real legal help you will, more often than not, be referred to some sweet but inexperienced “intern” who is spending a few months doing public interest work because it will look good on her resume which she will use to work in private enterprise where she can merrily forget you and your tedious, plebian problems.

Truman Capote’s Insights Regarding the “Parallel Political Discourses” in America Demonstrate Our Susceptibility to Virulent Extremism

In “In Cold Blood,” Capote suggested  that there are two American discussions going on at the same time:   There is the American discussion that exists on the pages of the New York Times and CBS.   This is a discussion that portrays this country as a land where everybody lives in homes that exist in Sit Coms such as “Make Room for Daddy “  This discussion perceives America as a relatively happy place, where people go to college, get good jobs and have confidence that good will prevail.

But Truman Capote said that there is another American conversation that  transpires at the same time, only it is not recorded or published or televised. (Now it is recorded:  It is on the internet)   It is the discussion that consumes the life of the 50 percent of Americans who do not have savings in excess of 600 dollars.  It is the discussion and the politics of people who are always living on the edge of disaster.  It is the discussion of people who will wrap themselves up in the flag because they love to fight, but they really don’t care if they are fighting for good or evil.  They are angry, disgusted, disaffected, and they are ripe fodder for the rantings of a demagogue.   They adored Father Coughlin and Huey Long in the 1930’s, George Wallace in the 1960’s, and admired Adolf Hitler for killing 20 million Russians.    

This Other America, the white underclass of America, is a place where vile and preposterous delusions can spread like a covid virus in a nursing home.  For example, JD Vance and Tucker Carlson have been disseminating the ideas of one Darryl Cooper, a poor approximation of a human being who dares to call himself an historian. 

Darryl Cooper said that the Nazis were humane to “let” six million Jews die because there was no food to feed them.  

The Nazis, among other things, had  a special fetish for insects and eyeballs.  Sometimes they inserted tiny insects into human eyes, sewed the eyelids shut, and got their jollies listening to their victims scream in agony.  The Nazis used human pelvises, sometimes the pelvises of Christian, Polish victims, as ashtrays.    The Nazis were the certifiable, execrable scum of the earth, and Darryl Cooper, JD Vance and Tucker Carlson should be hounded into the hottest sectors of hell for their diabolical, poisonous “politics.”

Yes, It Can Happen Here:

Some people will tell me that America is morally superior to Germany, that mass murder is antithetical to the “American Spirit,” and that my fears are the alarmist rantings of a Jewish leftist.

However, Germany, for all its faults -- and its faults are legion, titanic and terrible -- is probably not inherently, or genetically, or immutably more sinful and sadistic than America.

After all, Germany had a system of social security in the 19^th century.  The United States did not devise a system of social security until the 1930’s.   Germany had a gay rights movement that dated back to the 19^th century.  In America, gay rights did not gain any recognizable political strength until the AIDS crisis jolted gay people out of their acquiescence and submission.

Also, before the advent of Hitler, many Jews looked fondly upon Germany.  Whereas Tzarist Russia, by law, prohibited Jews from competing in civil society, Jews in Germany, after the emancipation effectuated through the Napoleonic conquests, allowed Jews to compete, and many Jews surged, academically, professionally and financially, in Germany.   

For example, before Hitler, when a Jew was happy and doing well, his fellow Jews would sometimes say that he was as “happy as a Jew, under Franz Joseph,” the Hapsburg Emperor who ruled the Austo-Hungarian Empire, a largely Germanic state,  before World War One.

(Of course, the immediately preceding paragraph should be qualified:  Although the final Hapsburg Emperor viewed the Jews with favor, his predecessors often hated the Jews, Empress Maria Theresa evicted all the Jews in Vienna, and the Germanic  Viennese were perhaps the most anti-Semitic people on earth as the City’s anti-semitic excesses, in the aftermath of Germany’s absorption of Austria in 1938, were so egregious that even Hitler wanted to curb them as he did not want to provoke resistance from the West or the Soviets.)

America, also, was not as golden and godlike as her advocates profess.  After all, we did practice the institution of slavery (“Gone with the Wind” was Hitler’s favorite movie), we gave native Americans the blankets of people who had died of small pox, and in Georgia, in 1916, half of the State’s Jewish residents were forced to flee the state when a Jewish man was charged with raping and killing a gentile girl and what passed for law enforcement devolved into a spate of lynch mobs.  In Indochina, we killed hundreds of thousands of  Vietnamese, Cambodians and Laotians even though none of those nations ever killed any Americans – except for Americans who had invaded their countries. 

What made Germans succumb to Hitler is the same damn defect which might make America succumb to Trumpian Fascism.

Hitler, like Trump, never got the electoral support of a majority of Germans.  Immediately before taking power, the Nazi Party got less than 40 percent of the vote.

Hitler took power, in large measure, because the entirety of the German right wing bent their knees to his commands.  Hindenburg appointed him Chancellor of Germany in 1933.  

Everyone in Germany who feared leftist change, the industrialists, monarchists, arch conservatives and East Prussian junkers,  acceded to his will, even those politicians and activists who considered him that silly corporal, that mediocre man of shabby intellect and morals, that coarse common man who tried so hard to ingratiate himself with German society but who was, at root, an Austrian wannabe.  Footnote 1

German elites bowed to Hitler, perhaps because they loved his hatred of communism, and they feared the German proletariat aching for a larger piece of the pie.  Also, German elites thought he was a passing phase, just as many Americans thought in 2015 and 2016 that Trump was a comical passing phase who offered a bit of color and drama to our all too often vacuous elections.  Finally,  the German ruling class was just too fearful and timid and rudderless to have the cojones to combat Hitler.

And America has the same defect.  The Republicans in Congress have been the most shameful caucus of cowardly  castratos in the many centuried history of the English-speaking peoples.   In large part, they have given Trump everything he has wanted and then some.   

Great Britain and the United States were great because of vibrant,  virile fighters and idealists who challenged despotism and tyranny and followed the North Star of their conscience.   From Runnymede which bequeathed the Magna Carta, to Agincourt, to the defeat of the Spanish Armada to Appomattox, where, in the words of the “Battle Hymn of the Republic,” we fought to make men free, the Anglo-American spirit illumined the earth like the lantern of the statue of liberty.  

And that is what made America great.

And if Trump wins, America will have snuffed out her greatness for the vulturous, villainous second coming of Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon.   

Footnote 1: I have been intrigued that the biggest champions of nationalism were themselves not citizens of the states they sought to champion:  Napolean was not from France but from Corsica, which was sometimes French and sometimes Italian; Alexander the Great heralded from Macedonia, not Greece;  and Hitler was sired by Austrians.  Similarly, Hitler idolized blond people, and he was not blond.
