Americans care about dollars, not democracy

Introductory preface: As I have said in the prefaces to my past few substack articles, I am in a hospital, my vision is impaired and am writing on an Itty bitty fuvking phone. Many people ask: How did America sink so low. During the depression, many fascist demagogues sought to rule America. Father Coughlin thundered that Jews were the enemy within, and his Neanderthal Archie Bunker supporters were ready to shout “Heil Hitler” with the alacrity of Trump dumb fucks shouting, like pavlov’s dogs, “lock her up”at every mention of Hillary Clinton.

But Americans had more sense in those days and voted for Roosevelt. And America had more sense even though college was a rarity back then.

Americans Don’t Care About Political Liberty

Compared to the rest of the world, most Americans through most of our history had a hefty share of economic and political liberty. (The assertion that we had lots of economic liberty is subject to enormous qualification, but I don't have the time)

Very early in our history, most Americans concentrated on economic liberty and couldn't give a rat's ass about political liberty. The French philosopher DeToqueville characterized Americans as disinterested in politics. Of course, they can be aroused by a few things. Christianity can inspire political action, but it's not reliable. Some fine Christians felt impelled to fight slavery, but some Christians saw the new testament as a rationale for killing Jews.

A huge hunk of America fits Marx’s portrait of the petty bourgeois pig to a Tee. They reason that freedom might be cute , but my wife, madam acquisitive bitch, must look ravishing jn a very expensive bracelet at the next Republican ball, so to hell with studying political issues and let's craft a brilliant new cigarette ad. In Germany they said Deutschland oober alles. Americans say dollars oober alles.

Sometimes I think think that Americans try to be like people on TV because they are so damn insecure (See “the lonely crowd,” written , if I recall correctly, by dsvid reissman in the 50s). So many young men immitated the fonz from happy days. The Fonz never gsve a shit about democracy. So many black women seem to be immitating George Jefferson’s maid in theJeffersons. She was a real smerican, too crass and crabby and bitchy to care about doing the right thing.

This problem isn't new. For example, although we were involved in Vietnam from the 40’s (at the latest since 1954, when we offered to give the French two atom bombs, one for Hanoi, one for Haiphong), to the 70’s, polls showed that in 1972, half of the moronic American populace didn’ t know we purported to be fighting north Vietnam,

Americans don't like intelligence. Too much Intelligence may be suggestive of.sissification. Americans go to high school to major in football and cheerleading.

Maybe Americans will learn when forces from england, France and other enlightened nations occupy America, and edify america, just as a better, former america made Germans, in 1945, look at their concentrarion and death camps. (At present, America's sins don't begin to match germany’s wickedness..But Hitler hadn't killed a whole lot of people in his first two months either.
